JK & Mandi's story
The power of God has no limits. He simply uses ordinary people to make extraordinary differences for His Kingdom. Jason Kelly, most commonly known as JK in the Shasta College community, and his wife Mandi are the perfect example of that.
JK has been working with students at Shasta College since 2001. Eleven years into his career, he had an idea to stimulate student engagement through a Bible study. JK reached out to a ministry called Athletes in Action to see if they could help him get started with a Bible-based ministry on campus. JK was connected with a guy named Taylor Hargrove who came alongside him to offer direction, support and share ideas for the movement.
JK’s recollection: “That fall, we started a small Bible study on campus with just a few guys—but honestly, it felt awkward. We were in a classroom with fixed chairs, and it just didn’t feel like family. In the spring of 2012, we shifted the study to our home. That change made all the difference.” By simply opening the doors of their home, an incredible ministry called The House was born.
Students quickly felt the calm, acceptance, comfort and warmth of the Kelly household and allowed their hearts to be open and moved. Through the encouragement and excitement from students, The House turned into a weekly gathering.
Jason and Mandi serve as a dynamite duo. Jason brings the heart and Mandi brings the home to this ministry. Jason shared “Mandi is the heartbeat of The House. She’s the host, the encourager, and truly the glue that keeps The House a home. She makes everyone feel seen, valued, and loved the moment they walk in.”
Through their faithfulness in serving young adults, God is showing up in a multitude of ways and the Kelly’s individual lives and marriage are being blessed as well.
Mandi shares “The House has become a very important part of my spiritual growth and has elevated my relationship with God and my husband. The young adults that come regularly have become like adopted children to Jason and I and there is no greater reward than watching them grow deeper in their faith in God and becoming Godly leaders for this next generation.”
Over the past decade The House has averaged between 35-50 athletes each week. Since the Covid shutdowns were lifted, about 105 athletes showed up. So far in 2025, the Kelly’s are seeing anywhere from 65-120 athletes per week.
The House ministry has grown much deeper than just a casual gathering of students. Lives are being changed forever and hearts are being healed. Jason reports that the growth he has seen “has been nothing short of supernatural. Hundreds of athletes have given their lives to Jesus. We’ve seen hundreds of first-time salvations, recommitments, and radical life transformations. To date, we’ve celebrated around 30 baptisms, with many more stories of renewal and faith that go beyond the water.”
So what is next for The House? The prayer for provision and guidance from the Lord will continue. Jason and Mandi are hopeful in what is to come and will continue to open the doors of their home for the young adults of Shasta College and the Redding community.
Their personal hope and prayer is “as God is faithful, we continue to remain faithful. He has provided in more ways than we can count. Whether we win or lose in sports, we pray that the real victories continue to happen at The House—where hearts are changed, lives are restored, and Jesus remains the center of it all. So far, so good.”
Jason and Mandi will continue to prayerfully seek God’s direction and be present in His Word and use their gifts as God sees fit. Just as 1 Peter 4:10-11 tells us, “each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”
